Luvata mud warriors help Isabel Hospice

(30 March 2015) Over half of the employees at Luvata in Welwyn Garden City are registered for the upcoming 5K Warrior Adrenaline Race (WAR), scheduled for Sunday, April 26, 2015 at Hartham Common in Hertford. The 5K race includes obstacles, hills, water and muddy terrain.

The team is armed with ample motivation to help local charity Isabel Hospice. The Hospice provides free end-of-life care for adults across eastern Hertfordshire. Participating Luvata employees hope to raise £3,800 for the Hospice, a cause very near and dear to their hearts.

“We’ve been listening to a colleague from the states talk about his tough mudders,” says Roberto Fernandez, Commercial Manager with Luvata Welwyn Garden. “It sounded like fun and a good team building opportunity to me, but not everybody agreed.  Then someone on our shop floor had the idea of doing one for charity and Isabel Hospice.  That’s when interest soared.”

“In June 2013 we lost a co-worker to cancer,” continues Fernandez. “Several of us have personally experienced the care and comfort that Isabel Hospice offers.  We’ve raised funds for Isabel Hospice before, but this time hopefully we’ll get a little healthier in the process,” brightens Fernandez, the race organizer for Luvata.

All care provided by Isabel Hospice is free to patients, their families and carers. The hospice is part-funded by the National Health Service (NHS) locally, but the majority of income is from fundraising and trading activity.

“For 2015,” says Gill Macdonald, Media Officer with Isabel Hospice, “We need to raise about £2.9 million from charitable sources to continue to provide our free services, so Luvata’s contributions are always appreciated. The £3,800 they hope to raise from WAR could pay for 25 home visits by one of our Isabel Nurse Specialists to a patient who wishes to spend their last days at home. ”

Founded in 1991, Luvata Welwyn Garden manufactures resistance-welding electrodes, shanks, adapters and projection-welding electrodes, serving the automotive, shipbuilding, construction, heavy equipment and electrical engineering industries throughout Europe.

In May 2017, the Special Products division of Luvata was acquired by Mitsubishi Materials Corporation.
