Green Transition Needs New Technologies and Solutions
Luvata’s oxygen-free copper tubes are used in power generation and distribution purposes. Luvata Pori’s new hot extrusion press has boosted the production of these copper tubes and nearly doubled the size of the tubes Luvata can produce.
High-Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) is a key enabler for a carbon-neutral energy system. It is highly efficient for transmitting large amounts of electricity over long distances, integration of renewables and interconnecting grids, opening up for new sustainable transmission solutions. The voltage in HVDC electricity transfer system can go to 1000 kV and even beyond. When dealing with such high voltages, safety is of most concern as components such as bushings become very large.
Oxygen-free Copper Tubes for High Voltage DC Bushings
Tubes for high voltage bushings need to have high electrical conductivity and consistent properties. Luvata’s oxygen-free copper OF-OK® meets both requirements.
“In addition to high electrical conductivity, tubes must be straight and surfaces free from scratches and dents. These are qualities that Luvata have long expertise to work with while serving demanding clients in power generation and distribution”, describes Ilppo Hiekkanen, Product Group Manager from Luvata Pori.
New Press Doubles the Tube Size
The new hot extrusion press enables the production of long tubes up to 9,2 m for high-voltage bushings.
“With our old hot extrusion press, our biggest tube size was limited around 220 kilograms. The new press has almost doubled our possible tube size – now we can make bigger tubes up to nearly 400 kilograms!” explains Hiekkanen.
