Copper in Architecture and Building
Luvata is proud to be a major supplier to the building and construction industry. For hundreds of years, copper has been used for architecture and building because of its twin properties of durability and natural beauty.
Copper is renowned for its freedom from maintenance, natural tint, subtle shades, workability and compatibility with other materials. No other material enhances buildings so distinctly and copper has successfully adapted itself to many architectural styles over the years.
Environmentally Friendly
What is perhaps less well known about copper is that it is an environmentally friendly material. When it is exposed to the elements, copper forms a self-protective surface film that prevents normal corrosion. So it needs repairing and replacing much less frequently than other materials. What is more, as a natural product, copper is almost totally recyclable. Around 40% percent of the total global consumption of refined copper is scrap-based. So its beauty is more than just skin-deep!

NCC Construction Sverige AB, one of the leading construction and property development companies in the Nordic region, needed a unique copper façade for Skellefteå Kraft’s new headquarters in Northern Sweden.
They asked Luvata to submit designs because they wanted the entire façade to be a single project, with a single supplier. Rising to the challenge, Luvata created a full size mock-up of the entire system in its Nordic Centre in Pori, Finland. This allowed NCC to fully understand and appreciate all the advantages of the design, and they soon decided that it was an ideal solution.
A complete façade system
Luvata’s prefabricated Nordic System will cover 4,000m2 of the outside of the building and is perfectly suited for the flexible design and express installation requirements of modern buildings. The design includes Nordic cassettes, panels and profiles, as well as fasteners and flashing made from copper sheets.
Before embarking on the project, NCC worked with both General Architecture in Stockholm (responsible for the architectural planning of the new building) and the Swedish Royal Technical University (KTH) to conduct environmental research into materials for the façade. The research showed copper to be environmentally friendly for many reasons, including its longevity and recyclability.
