Industrial Case: Thunder Horse (Oil & Gas)
We partnered with DWD International to keep Thunder Horse cool in severe conditions
In the challenging world of oil exploration, we partnered with DWD International to design, construct and install the topside air equipment for the World's largest semi-submersible oil platform. Working closely together, we developed high-end, explosion-proof condensing coils that cool the control room, motor control centre and the living quarters for the 229 people on board. The coils will contribute significantly to the efficiency of the rig over its lifetime.
The co-operative engineering approach added significant value, not just to DWD International, but also to BP and Exxon Mobil, the owners of the rig. The Thunder Horse platform is the size of a modern football stadium, with a displacement of 130,000t. Despite its size, Thunder Horse has a minimal environmental footprint, leaving almost no trace of itself in either the sea or the sky while operating at a cost well below the industry average.
